Why Being “Green” Is the Next Big Thing

We all know that it is important to try and become more “green” to help the environment. When people/organization use the word “green”, they are referring to being more sustainable, in such ways as recycling, using less energy, and lowering ones’ carbon footprint. Being that way is good for the Earth, but did you know how it can actually benefit you in your career life?

Sustainability in the work place is only increasing. More and more companies are switching to better alternatives for energy, products, and services, which then results in a demand for those jobs. In 2014, during the second quarter of the year, jobs in clean energy and clean transportation jobs double from the first quarter. 18,000 jobs just in “green” market jobs were announced in 29 different states during that year. According the Fortune, they stated “The growth spurt in green energy projects is partly a reaction to the [EPA’s] Clean Power Plan.” These type of jobs are estimated to grow, and not only in those two categories, but many other jobs relating to the “green” market.

Even though if you are not looking for a job in sustainability, employers are still looking for people who seem to have some interest in sustainability, especially now that many companies are required by law to follow guidelines on being more “green”. So if a person comes in with experience in sustainability wanting a job, they could have a leg up in their competition. Students do not need to be sustainability minors to be able to learn about all the things they could do to become more sustainable. They can take the knowledge they learned from the organization and show employers how they are making a positive impact on this world.
